We are sharing an update regarding an unexpected journey with my dad, Rex. As a 93-year-old with low vision who lost his wife of 65 years in 2023, he has already navigated profound change. We share these events knowing you face your own hardships, equal or greater. We hope to provide a backdrop of God’s profound love, provision, and sovereignty, encouraging you to praise Him amid your trials as well.
God’s Sovereign Timing Behind the Scenes.
We stand in awe of how God orchestrated our summer schedule. Originally, Amy and I planned to visit Missouri to give my brother, Tim, a break from caregiving. When Tim Colorado changed his plans, we shifted our dates to visit dates. Unexpected forest fires cut our trip short, so we arrived at my dad’s early on July 6. Unbeknownst to us, my dad had just developed a severe leg infection. Because of our altered plans, we arrived exactly when he needed help.
Proverbs 19:21 reminds us, “Many are the plans in a person’s heart, but it is the Lord’s purpose that prevails.”
Medical Events and God’s Provision.
By July 8, his condition worsened, leading to an emergency leg amputation. While a heavy trial, God’s provision was deeply evident. We were perfectly positioned to help, and eventually, all three of Rex’s sons, our wives and three granddaughters (one an ICU nurse) were able to gather by his side.
We experienced the promise of Romans 8:28: “In all things God works for the good of those who love him.”
Rehabilitation and New Life
Rex’s recovery was a beautiful testament to God’s grace. He cheerfully progressed through rehab, maintaining his joy and memorizing the stories of every nurse. He was successfully discharged on July 31.
Amazingly, the speed of his rehabilitation enabled us to fulfill another planned trip. We were able to leave Missouri and travel to Chicago, where we are currently waiting with our second daughter for the birth of her third child—a baby girl, with a due date of July 29. We are praising God as He finishes the work of knitting this child in her womb (Psalm 139:13).
Praising God in All Circumstances.
Whatever unexpected difficulties you face today, you can praise God in all circumstances. His timing is perfect, and His sovereignty reigns over all things.
We cling to the truth of Jeremiah 29:11: “For I know the plans I have for you… plans to give you hope and a future.”
